Dr Abdus Salam

Dr Abdus Salam:-

                               He has the distinction of being awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize, thus bringing recognition to his country, Pakistan. Abdus Salam scored the highest marks recorded for matriculation at the Punjab University and won a scholarship. After completing his graduation from the Punjab University , he acquired a master;s degree in mathematics and Physics and then a doctorate in Physics from the University of Cambridge in 1948-49. He was a fellow of St John;s College, Cambridge (UK) and Princeton University (USA).





From 1951 to 1958, Dr Abdus Salam first served at the Punjab University and then Imperial College , UK. On his return to Pakistan, he was a member of the Atomic Energy Commission and in 1961, he set up the Space and Upper Atmosphere Research Commission known as SUPARCO.



However, when denied the opportunity to set up a science center in Pakistan. Dr Abdus Salam established the International Center for Theoretical Physics in Trieste , Italy, in 1964. This was later renamed Dr Abdus Salam International Center for Theoretical Physics.


He also founded the World Academy of Sciences. Commited to providing opportunity and improvement in the field of science, Dr Abdus Salam provided for many Pakistani scientists to persue postgraduate and doctoral studies. He received several national and international awards and 32 honorary doctorates from universities in 23 countries. His efforts were crowned with the award of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1979, for his outstanding work on the theory of elementary particle physics.
